The 2012 Cobia Flotilla was held on Tuesday, May 8th. This year, we had 5 boats participate, and 16 people. A significant increase over the inaugural event with 2 boats and 3 people! The weather was great, but the bait forgot to show up… Despite this setback we managed to do well – all things considered. Every boat had several strong bites with many big sharks caught, and a few monster mystery-fish that broke off or nearly spooled us, just to keep things exciting. But the real reward is camaraderie and a good time and that is what the fishing club is all about… This year’s honors go to Capt Will Absher and his crew for a 37.5″ catch. Congrats men! We are already looking forward to next year’s event.
Megan (SSWA Youth Advisor) here! Wednesday, May 9th we will have our first annual SSWA Safety Event. We have several events planned.
We will have a youth life vest event in the swimming pool courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard. Please make sure that you bring your child’s life vest for this event! We will demonstrate how to properly wear your life jacket, how difficult it is to put on a life vest while in the water, and have tattoos, stickers, coloring books and more for kids that participate. Once the event is over, there will be a life guard on duty and we’ll be able to play in the pool!
After that, we will have a boater safety course presented by the Coast Guard. This will show adults how to be safe on the water while boating and fishing. Important stuff to keep the whole family safe on the water!
At the end of the event there will be a tackle swap where members can exchange items they don’t need for items they can use on their next trip!
Finally, SSWA will provide free food for the event! How can you lose?! Safety information, give aways, free food, and a chance to swap for some tackle! Win, win, win, win, win!
Normally club events are for members only, but since this one is for safety we invite all members, regardless of family or individual membership, to bring their families out for this important event. If you have friends that are interested in the club and would like to come, please bring them also. Any chance we have to promote safe fishing is welcomed! We will be accepting new members at the event.
This event will start at 6:00 PM at the pavilion, instead of our usual time of 6:30. It will be a good time for a good reason – safety and helping kids! Can’t wait to see you there!
Congratulations to Alex Sieber for posting a new youth club record trout at 20.25″. Alex caught his trout fishing with Grand-Dad Ralph Phillips using a Z-man jerk shad.
